Fort Lauderdale air show on track for 2010, with a new name and website

From SunSentinel.com:

The annual air show is still taxiing toward a 2010 launch
.

Stanton Smith, one of two local businessmen given permission by city commissioners to create a new air show, said he's still working on it. He doesn't have dates yet, but so far the plans are going well. He's asked the U.S. military to participate, and he said "every indicator suggests they’re very anxious to return.''

The show does have a new name: Air Lauderdale
. Here's the website. They're also on Facebook. Click here.

The show that was formerly called the Air and Sea Show drew hundreds of thousands to the Fort Lauderdale beachfront every May from 1995 to 2007 to watch military fighter plans and stunt pilots.

It had its detractors, though. Former Commissioner Christine Teel said she heard earfuls about it from the Galleria Mall, because the show coincided with the weekend before Mother's Day and reportedly put a big damper on that once-lucrative shopping time for the mall. She insisted no air show in the future be held on that weekend.

But Teel's gone, and four members of the City Commission are new. They'll be talking tomorrow about big beach events, the air show included.

A beach music festival that was pitched as an event on the same huge scale as the air show is not going to take place this May as planned. .

Past commissioners said they wanted the live music festival, and the air show, as long as the two aren't the same weekend.

Looks like they'll both be launched in 2010, and this year will be quiet.
